Leaving Violence Program
The Domestic Violence Leaving Violence Program is a national Australian Government initiative that helps Domestic Violence eligible victim-survivors of intimate partner violence to leave safely, offering up to $5,000 in financial support plus up to 12 weeks of safety planning, risk assessment and referrals; the program commenced 1 July 2025 and is delivered nationally by Telstra Health (with four First Nations–led regional trials

Domestic Violence Payment
Eligible applicants can access up to $5,000: up to $1,500 in cash (bank transfer) and up to $3,500 for goods and services via a prepaid card, plus tailored support for as much as 12 weeks (risk & needs assessment, safety planning, and referrals to legal, counselling and other services).

Examples: funds may be used for legal fees, housing and moving costs, transport/phones, security needs and other essentials that support safe separation.

Who is eligible
You must:

be 18+ and a victim-survivor of intimate partner violence;

have left or have a plan to leave;
-
have changed (or plan to change) living arrangements within the past 12 weeks because of the violence (including where the person using violence has left the home);

reside in Australia (Australian citizen, permanent resident or temporary visa holder);

be experiencing financial stress;
-
not have received LVP/EVP/TVP support in the last 12 months.
Support is open to all genders and sexualities; evidence is flexible and a worker can help gather documents. Homelessness does not preclude eligibility

How to apply
Apply online via the official LVP website or call the toll-free helpline; you’ll schedule a safe callback and speak with a trained support worker (average call ~40 minutes).

Delivery model

National Program: delivered everywhere in Australia by Telstra Health (including external territories).

There are 4 locations involved in the regional trials. Victim-survivors in any of these locations can choose support through either the national program or their local regional trial provider.

The regional trials focus on offering specialised and culturally appropriate support in the local region. They will help to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors.
The regional trials will provide face-to-face services. Providers are able to go into community to offer support.

What changed vs Escaping Violence Payment (EVP) / TVP

From 1 July 2025, the LVP replaces the EVP trial and the Temporary Visa Holders Experiencing Violence Pilot (TVP), making support ongoing and visa-inclusive. If you applied to EVP/TVP before 30 June 2025, your support continues and you don’t need to re-apply​

What is the Leaving Violence Program (LVP)?
The LVP is a national Australian Government initiative that helps eligible victim-survivors safely leave violent intimate-partner relationships with up to $5,000 in financial support plus up to 12 weeks of safety planning, risk assessment and referrals; it began 1 July 2025.

How much support can I get and in what form?
Eligible people can receive up to $5,000: up to $1,500 cash (bank transfer) and up to $3,500 for goods and services via a prepaid card, alongside tailored support for up to 12 weeks.

Who is eligible?
You must be 18+, live in Australia, be a victim-survivor of intimate partner violence, have left or plan to leave, be experiencing financial stress, and have changed (or plan to change) living arrangements within 12 weeks; you must not have received LVP/EVP/TVP in the past 12 months.

Are temporary visa holders eligible?
Yes—Australian citizens, permanent residents and temporary visa holders can all apply if other criteria are met. \

Can I apply if I haven’t physically left the home?
Yes—if the person using violence has left (or been excluded from) the home, you may be eligible, provided other criteria are met.

Can I apply if I’m homeless or have no fixed address?
Yes—homelessness does not preclude eligibility if the other criteria are met.

How do I apply Domestic Violence Payment?
Apply online via the LVP website or call 1800 2 LEAVE (1800 253 283) to speak with a trained worker; you can schedule a safe call-back, and the intake/support call typically takes up to ~40 minutes.

Is the LVP a crisis service?
No—the LVP isn’t a crisis line. If you’re in danger, call 000. For 24/7 counselling and information, contact 1800RESPECT.

What documents or evidence do I need?
Evidence requirements are flexible; a support worker will discuss what you have (e.g., IDs, basic documentation). The program is trauma-informed and can work with other services to minimise retelling.

What can the funds be used for?
Funds may cover safety-related goods and services (e.g., moving costs, essential items, security, transport/phones, legal help) as agreed in your needs assessment; delivery is via cash + prepaid card, not store vouchers.

How quickly will I hear back?
You select a safe time for a call-back during the application; workers aim to support you in a timely manner (the program sets assessment targets, but timeframes vary).

What languages and accessibility options are available?
Fact sheets are available in multiple languages and Easy Read; you can apply by phone with the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS 131 450) and nominate a trusted support person.

Who delivers the LVP?
Telstra Health delivers the national program (Mon–Fri 8:30 am–5:30 pm), and four First Nations-led regional trials operate in Broome, Cairns, Darwin and Dubbo (face-to-face support).

Can I choose between the national program and a regional trial?
Yes—if you live in Broome, Cairns, Darwin or Dubbo regions, you can choose either the national service or your local First Nations-led provider.

Does the LVP replace the Escaping Violence Payment (EVP) and the Temporary Visa Holders Experiencing Violence Pilot (TVP)?
Yes—as of 1 July 2025 LVP is ongoing and the EVP and TVP stopped taking new applications on 30 June 2025; existing EVP/TVP clients continue to be supported.
